Dr Cathy Speed

Dr Speed is Consultant in Rheumatology, Sport & Exercise Medicine at Cambridge University Hospital. She is also a Senior Physician for the English Institute of Sport, the main provider of medical and scientific support for British Olympic Sports.
She is a Member of the British Olympic Medical Committee, is Chief Medical Officer of Team GB Badminton and is Physician to Middlesex cricket and the academy at the Lords Ground. She was Chief Medical Officer for the Athlete Holding Camp in China during the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. She has also accompanied elite sports teams across the world to major sporting events.
Dr Speed ensures that delivers the highest quality healthcare to people of all levels of fitness and ability.
Dr Speed has a particular expertise in musculoskeletal injuries and arthritis, in rehabilitation and in exercise medicine in health and chronic disease. She also has a specific interest in the diagnosis and management of complex musculoskeletal pain. Hence, many of her patients are not sports people but are those with significant medical issues that affect their daily function and quality of life.
She is very active in research and in writing, lecturing, and teaching at a national and international level. She has written an award winning textbook on Rheumatology and soft tissue injuries. Her most recent textbook (The Oxford Textbook of Sports Injuries) was published in March 2011.
Complex Musculoskeletal Pain
A focused area of Dr Speeds work is the diagnosis and management of complex musculoskeletal pain. This includes patients who have not responded as expected to other interventions, such as medications injections and surgery for their condition. Such patients frequently require further diagnostic approaches, and advanced therapies to address their complaints.
